One Equal Music is a melodic and dramatic anthem for choir of a sermon by John Donne (1573-1631) in which the poet imagines life after death in heaven as a state of perfect peacefulness. It is set here for four part (SATB) solo choir. I have adapted Donne’s words a minimal amount, in the interests of the music.
One Equal Music Bring us, O Lord God, at our last awakening, into the house and gate of heaven. To enter through that gate, and dwell in that house, no cloud, nor sun, no darkness, nor dazzling, but one equal light, no noise, no silence, but one equal music, no fears, no hopes, but one equal possession, no friends, nor foes, but one equal communion, no ends, or beginnings, but one equal eternity, in the habitations of thy glory, and dominion, world without end, Amen.
